Building the Perfect Competition 10/22

Choosing the Right Barrel

A competition 10/22 build starts with the barrel. For rimfire matches, a 16-inch bull barrel in .920 profile gives you the best balance of weight and accuracy. Look for button-rifled blanks with a match chamber cut specifically for high-velocity ammunition. Brands like Kidd, Volquartsen, and Tactical Solutions all produce barrels that consistently deliver sub-MOA groups at 50 yards.

Trigger and Action Work

The factory Ruger trigger breaks at around 5 to 6 pounds with noticeable creep. For competition, you want a clean break at 2 to 2.5 pounds. A Kidd two-stage trigger or Volquartsen target hammer kit will transform the action. Pair the trigger with a polished bolt and an auto bolt release for faster reloads during timed stages.

Chassis, Grip, and Final Assembly

The chassis is where the ARES Pro shines. At 13.25 ounces with a free-floating barrel channel, it delivers a rock-solid platform without the weight penalty of aluminum alternatives. M-LOK slots let you mount a hand stop or barricade support exactly where you need it, and the integrated Picatinny rail accepts any optic mount.

Finish the build with an NXG custom grip for consistent hand placement and a quality red dot sight. A Vortex Razor or Aimpoint Micro works well for steel matches where speed matters more than magnification. Total build weight should land between 4.5 and 5 pounds, giving you a rifle that transitions fast and holds steady.
